What is an Item Upgrader in Pokemon Go?

Costs
There are a few costs related to upgrades of items. The most significant cost is the upgrade itself. This price is contingent on the new level of the item and the amount of perks it gains and can be costly. It is also costly to upgrade an item to a higher tier (such as Explorer > Champion, or Veteran > Heroic).

You can also add additional components to the upgrade to increase the chance of success. These are shown in a window that is above the + button. There are a few limitations. The maximum amount of material you can add is displayed directly above the + button.
A Blacksmith Blessing, or an upgraded version, can be used to boost the likelihood of an upgrade succeeding. This item is beneficial in the event that you have an item or weapon gear that has reached the highest level for its tier, or is close to it. It allows you to upgrade the equipment to the next level without risking breaking.
If an upgrade fails the upgrade will be reversed to its previous state. This is typically a downgrade, but can also be an upgrade. It is recommended to save an upgrade when you are close to the maximum level of an item, and then use it as an option last resort.
